Many small businesses bought Office 365 through GoDaddy because it was quick and cheap. But that convenience often comes with hidden limits: missing features, confusing support, and a licence that isn't quite the Microsoft 365 you expected. Here's what's really different, and how to move across without losing email or sleep.
When you buy Office 365 through GoDaddy, you're not buying directly from Microsoft. GoDaddy is a reseller, and what they sell is often a cut-down or older version of the service. That means features you might assume are included, such as advanced email security, Teams calling, or certain compliance tools, may be missing or locked behind a different plan.
The bigger issue is control. Your admin centre lives inside GoDaddy's portal, not Microsoft's. If you want to add a user, change a password policy, or set up multi-factor authentication, you often have to go through GoDaddy's interface or their support queue. For a small business, that extra layer slows everything down.
There's also the question of support. Microsoft support generally won't help you directly if your licence came through a reseller. You're sent back to GoDaddy. If you already have an IT provider, they may also be limited in what they can do on your behalf.

Migrating to Microsoft 365 directly means your tenant is managed by Microsoft, and you or your IT partner have full admin access. In practice, that gives you:
For most small businesses, the move isn't about saving money on licences. It's about removing friction and getting the tools you thought you already had.
The good news is that email migration between Microsoft tenants is well-trodden ground. The bad news is that doing it without a plan can cause downtime, lost email, or a broken website. Here's a sensible order of operations.
1. Check what you actually have. Log into your GoDaddy account and list every mailbox, alias, and distribution group. Note any shared mailboxes, calendar permissions, or public folders. This is your inventory.
2. Set up the new Microsoft 365 tenant. Buy the right licences directly from Microsoft or through a partner. Create your users and assign licences. Don't touch DNS yet.
3. Migrate the data. Use a migration tool or ask your IT provider to move mailboxes, calendars, and contacts. This can run while the old system is still live, so your team keeps working.
4. Update DNS carefully. Your domain's MX records, autodiscover, and SPF/DKIM/DMARC settings need to point to Microsoft 365. This is the step that most often goes wrong. If your website is hosted with GoDaddy, don't move the nameservers unless you've planned it. Our website hosting team sees this trip up businesses regularly.
5. Cut over and test. Once DNS propagates, send test emails in and out. Check mobile devices, Outlook, and any line-of-business apps that send email. Then cancel the old GoDaddy licences.
If you'd rather not do this yourself, a Microsoft 365 migration service will handle the whole process, usually outside working hours.
The migration itself is rarely the hard part. The details around it are.
One more thing: if you use GoDaddy for anything else, such as domain registration or website hosting, don't assume it all moves together. Email and hosting are separate services, and untangling them takes a bit of care.
If you have a handful of mailboxes and a basic setup, a careful DIY migration is possible. Microsoft provides tools and documentation, and the process is well documented. But if you have shared mailboxes, multiple domains, line-of-business apps, or no appetite for risk, it's worth getting help.
A good IT provider will inventory your setup, run the migration in the background, update DNS, test everything, and hand over a working system. They'll also make sure your security settings are sensible from day one, rather than bolted on later.
If you're not sure whether your current setup is GoDaddy-resold or direct, that's the first thing to check. It takes five minutes and tells you whether you need to migrate at all. If you'd like a hand, our Microsoft 365 support team can review your tenant and advise on next steps.
