Raid is a collection of disks that are configured in such a way that results in less downtime and less data loss should a disaster occur. There are several RAID Levels or RAID configurations available which all set out to achieve higher redundancy and reliability - all except RAID ZERO that is.
The main purpose of RAID is to provide data redundancy. Typically, if a hard drive fails, you'll find that you are unable to continue working, With RAID implemented, it's actually possible to continue working. This is because data is written across several disks rather than just one. Some RAID levels allow you to remove a faulty disk whilst leaving your users unaffected.
RAID is particularly useful for  critical machines and servers.
